Campaign promotion

Vote March 10–13, 2025

The ATA promotes the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) election by

  • Announcing all candidates on our website and in the ATA News
  • Posting candidates’ biographies and video speeches on our website.
  • Using social media to spread awareness of the election and clarify voting instructions.
  • Sharing election information with school representatives.
  • Hosting election forums.
  • Promoting elections at conventions and providing a campaign table.
  • Distributing campaign materials through a special school mailing.
  • Mailing campaign materials to certain groups of members.

As a candidate, you have a variety of opportunities to campaign and to promote the PEC election. You also have requirements to fulfill by specific deadlines,  such as providing your bio to the ATA and participating in any forums planned by the ATA or your local, depending on the position you are running for and whether it is contested or not.

Candidate announcement

Upon the close of nominations, the ATA will announce all candidates on its website and in the ATA News

Each candidate should submit a headshot photo that is consistent with the election rules to accompany the announcement.

Headshot photo requirements:

  • Photos must be emailed to the elections administrative officer (elections@ata.ab.ca) in a digital format, such as JPEG or TIF, by January 20, 2025
  • Preferred graphic specifications: 2 inches by 3 inches in size and 300 dots per inch (dpi) resolution.

Candidate bios, platforms and speeches

Each candidate is asked to submit a brief biography and campaign platform summary for publication in the ATA News and on the ATA website. We also request a campaign video speech from each candidate to publish on the website and on our YouTube channel.

Be sure to participate in this important part of your campaign! Submitting these items ensures all ATA members have access to information on which to base their votes.

All deadlines are firm! Plan ahead to have your submissions in by the deadlines stated below.

Biography and campaign platform submission requirements

  • Bio and platform should be combined in a single .doc file and emailed to elections@ata.ab.ca by noon on January 20, 2025. Any late documents will not be published by the ATA.
  • President candidates: maximum 500 words for combined bio and platform.
  • Vice-president or district representative candidates: maximum 300 words for combined bio and platform.
  • All submissions are edited by the ATA for spelling, grammar and length to suit the requirements of the website and the ATA News.

Campaign speech video requirements

Video upload instructions will be emailed to all candidates.

  • Recordings must be submitted to the ATA by noon on January 24, 2025.
  • Speeches must not exceed five minutes in length. The timing of the video begins when the candidate starts to speak. If your video begins with graphics, the timing begins at the first frame of your video.
  • ATA logos must not appear anywhere in your video. You can, however, use the official PEC election candidate logo, which is available in English and French (please see below).
  • Videos must be shot in landscape mode.
  • Videos must be in MP4 format.
  • Candidates will be provided with the YouTube link to their campaign video.

Campaign table at teachers’ conventions

During election years, the ATA purchases floor space at every teachers’ convention for candidates to campaign.

This area will have nonpartisan signage promoting the election itself, as well as a table upon which candidates can display their materials.

Please refer to the Candidates’ Handbook for detailed information.

Election forums

Once candidates are confirmed, the ATA will arrange virtual election forums, providing candidates in contested races with a formal opportunity to engage with ATA members and campaign for votes.

ATA locals may arrange additional forums or other campaign events.

Details on the forums will be communicated by email to candidates.

Special school mailing

Throughout the school year, the ATA sends regular mailings to all school districts in the province. During the election, the ATA covers the cost of one school mailing of campaign materials for each candidate.

If you choose to participate in the school mailing, please read these instructions carefully.

Requirements

  • You may submit a maximum of two items for the mailing.
