Teachers comment on class sizes and the ATA’s class size awareness campaign

Paulette Morck
In our school of almost 1,400 very few of our classes are close to 33; more are close to 40!

Leslie James
Add in the complexity of the classroom and you have a recipe for disaster.

Teachers know that class sizes are too big. The question should be what can we do next, especially if UCP gets in again? ATA… Let’s get the message out to the public. Doesn’t appear to be a great sense of urgency.

And a lot of students need additional assistance, so there are usually few EAs as well.

Class sizes, yet again. Enough! Pay teachers!!!!!!! All these class size machinations fall on deaf ears with citizens/taxpayers. After years and years of class-size surveys, there has been almost zero change/advancement on the issue. Teachers deserve a 15% salary increase minimum!!!!! Focus on increasing teachers’ salaries.

How will you measure the impact of this effort? How will you “demand change?”

30 nine year olds…how can all their educational needs be met?

It’s too hard to meet so many needs with that many — crowd control over deep learning.

I was just told don’t get excited for next year ... our class sizes are 35 at the smallest end! I haven’t even finished this school year with 33 kids, and I am now worried about starting next year with 35, meaning by the end of the year I will be closer to 40 kids in Grade 8!! This can’t be the reality for our kids! Class size matters and is one of the greatest impacts on learning.

These numbers are absolutely overcrowding and harming our students. Lots of these large class sizes include combined grades and intricate, complex needs beyond academics. School staff want the best for our students and we can start with better class sizes.

Absolutely. Every year the demands increase. We are post Covid with so many gaps and no support for the diversity of children and the delays resulting from the last few years. It’s ridiculous. I love my job and I love my kids, I just wish that I could do more to help support them.

Far too big, with greater complexities & fewer supports! This grows year by year! HELP!
