SARO welcomes new executive staff officer

The ATA’s Southern Alberta Regional Office is proud to announce that Philippe Bresee, a seasoned educator with extensive experience in law, will be joining their team as the newest executive staff officer in Teacher Employment Services. Bresee will begin his new role on Aug. 1, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to benefit Alberta’s teachers.

Bresee’s career spans many years of teaching, school leadership and legal expertise. He has served as the principal of Ecole Notre-Dame des Monts in Canmore since 2020 and previously taught Grade 12 social studies, English and shop/woodworking. Bresee holds a BEd degree from the University of Alberta and a law degree from the University of Ottawa.

Bresee will play a key role in supporting and assisting teachers with employment concerns and bargaining. His background in employment and labour law, coupled with his teaching experience, will make him an asset to the Association.

Additionally, Bresee’s fluency in French is an added advantage that will enable him to serve the French-speaking communities in the southern Alberta region better.

“I am a true Franco-Albertan, born and raised in Edmonton. My wife and I raise our kids en français. I am thrilled to work in both official languages,” he said.

4 more things about Philippe

What makes you the most excited to start work at the ATA?
Finally meeting my career goal of working for the Association. Check! Took me 12 years and I’ll finally be in a position to use both my teaching and law degrees simultaneously to connect and assist teachers.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself in your first year as a teacher?
The advice I have remains quite similar to what I told myself as a first-year teacher: keep your head down and work as hard as you possibly can to plan lessons that will make sense the following year. Take detailed notes of successes and failures! You will survive!

Favourite song to put you in a good mood?
Rasputin by Boney M. Years back, Grade 9 social studies students in Alberta studied the USSR. My social teacher used this song in our class. Makes me smile every time!

Favourite activity/hobby/project on the go at home?
Mountain biking and woodworking. Anything that takes me outdoors!
