Exempting select students from in-person learning during CUPE strikes

Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling has issued the following statement with regard to the ministerial orders exempting select students from in-person learning during the current Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) strikes:

“The underfunding of our public education system has led to a strike by support workers that is encroaching on the education of students with complex needs.

Denying vulnerable students with complex learning needs access to in-person instruction is unjustifiable.

The government needs to stop the excuses and properly fund education so every student is supported and can attend school.”

The Alberta Teachers’ Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, supports teachers’ professional practice and serves as the advocate for its 46,000 members.
