The Opportunity

Working within the scope of their trade to provide electrical, mechanical, plumbing and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning expertise, the Tradesperson, in collaboration with Building staff, helps to maintain a clean and safe work environment at Barnett House. Reporting to the Building and Facilities Operations Manager, the incumbent maintains the building’s, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems and equipment within their scope of ticketed education and helps other building staff and contractors undertake general repairs. Both preventive and responsive building maintenance are responsibilities of this position in order to keep the building functioning to all applicable codes and regulations. Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Performing scheduled preventive and general maintenance on the mechanical/electrical/HVAC/plumbing systems including monitoring panels and circuitry, 
  • Reviews blueprints and specifications; ensures drawings and specifications will function as designed in environment intended for use.
  • Constructs installs and replaces electrical control panels, rough and finish wiring and control systems in compliance with the NEC, NESC, NFPA and the UFC.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC control circuits for motors and control devices 
  • Maintains a working knowledge of changes in technology, compliance, and repair techniques.
  • Advising on feasibility of repairs and related cost estimates and arranges for vendor quotes if required. Ordering specialty parts and supplies as required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Helps to test repaired equipment for proper performance.
  • Helping with the daily maintenance of the environmental, mechanical and electrical systems, including the heating, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, distribution and lighting systems.
  • Provides technical advice and information on code related issues relating to building systems and monitoring programs.  
  • Collaborating and communicating with other building staff regarding assignments.
  • Backing up other building staff as assigned and assisting with work overload as needed.
  • Following work safety practices and procedures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment related to the position.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation to address site emergencies after hours and on weekends. Provides technical Assistance/Emergency Response of existing facilities building systems.
  • Reporting, recording and responding to safety concerns and emergencies that are created by or may impact the systems that operate the building. 
  • Complying with all occupational health and safety legislation, guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and practices.
  • Opening and locking entry doors and setting building security alarms.
  • Managing the inventory of keys and keeping a list of staff who have been assigned keys.
  • Reporting, recording, and responding to safety concerns and emergencies. Acting in emergency warden positions as assigned.
  • Keeps detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation.
  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • A journeyman ticket as related to the position. Red Seal designation preferred. 
  • A Class 5 driver’s license.
  • A Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System certificate.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a tradesperson operating and maintaining large-scale buildings.
  • Strong skills in reading and interpretation of electrical, mechanical schematics/logic drawings
  • Ability to work in conditions such as confined spaces, heights, dust, and temperature extremes
  • Physically able to carry out the duties of the position (i.e. able to work a significant portion of time, climb ladders, work in awkward positions, lift or move heavy material or equipment, work in hot or dirty environments, and respond promptly on foot to building emergencies). 
  • A proven safety record including the ability to follow safety procedures, work with limited supervision and respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies and situations in which safety is an issue.
  • Good communications, interpersonal, problem-solving, organizational and time-management skills.
