As the professional organization of Alberta teachers, the Alberta Teachers’ Association promotes and advances public education, supports teachers’ professional practice and serves as the advocate for its members.
The Opportunity
The Cook plays a lead role in kitchen operations and in preparing banquet event orders. The Cook is also responsible for ensuring that food is handled and prepared according to legislated policies and procedures. Specific duties include the following:
- Preparing food for the cafeteria, meetings and events
- Leading all menu planning, including developing the weekly cafeteria menu in consultation with the Food and Beverage Services Supervisor and creating recipes that accommodate dietary restrictions
- Leading kitchen operations and training casual staff
- Acting as lead in all Food Services operations in the absence of the Food and Beverage Services Supervisor
- Interacting with customers and Food Services staff about menu substitutions and related costs
- Placing, receiving and inspecting all grocery and supply orders, including front-end deliveries as required
- Maintaining inventories of food and supplies
- Meeting with vendors to review products and supplies
- Ensuring that ovens, freezers, coolers, deep fryers, broilers and other kitchen equipment are clean
- Collaborating with Food Services staff to maintain a clean and safe working environment
- Assisting front-end staff in preparing catering orders, cleaning up, serving, cashiering and working in the dish room
- Helping to manage safety concerns in Food Services
Qualifications
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working as a lead cook
- Menu-planning experience
- Experience being a leader and dealing with the public
- Experience in a fine-dining or high-end catering environment (an asset)
- Valid Red Seal Cook certification
- Safe Food Handling certificate
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System certification
- ProServe certification (an asset)
- Extensive knowledge of the food and beverage industry and of kitchen safety procedures
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
- The ability to follow and prepare standardized recipes
- Good knife-handling skills
- The ability to remain calm during busy periods and in the presence of difficult customers
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use the internet and email
- The ability to read and write orders, menus and recipes and to perform basic arithmetic calculations
- Must be able to lift up to 25 kilograms and push up to 50 kilograms
