Communications Officer, Social Media and Media Relations

The Alberta Teachers’ Association invites applications for the position of a Communications Officer, Social Media and Media Relations.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Communications Manager, this position works collaboratively within the Government Communications team to enhance the Association’s communication approaches and overall engagement with internal and external audiences. Responsibilities and portfolios may shift according to changing operational needs, however the position is required to research, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate communications strategies and audience outreach success when shaping and delivering key messages that promote Association initiatives, programs, services, and events. Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Responding to all media inquiries and coordinating interviews. 
  • Providing ongoing support to the Associate Coordinator, Communications by developing or assisting in the development of media releases, key messages, talking points and media-related presentations. 
  • Observing media interviews and provide or assist with coaching. 
  • Arranging support for media training sessions as required. 
  • Coordinating the distribution of media releases.
  • Assisting with the organization of news conferences. 
  • Manages the Association’s social media presence, analyzes social media metrics with a view to guiding future social media campaigns.
  • Planning, editing, and creating engaging content for the Association’s social media channels.
  • Monitoring social media analytics and using the results to improve content.
  • Creating and implementing social media strategies and using member engagement, usability, and other analytics to measure their effectiveness.
  • Delivers and prepares Members’ Update emails on important and timely issues affecting the membership. 
  • Soliciting articles for publication in The Learning Team.
  • Overseeing production of the online and newsletter versions of the publication.
  • Leading the planning processes to ensure that the publication features stories that the Association deems are of interest to the target audience.

Qualifications

  • A diploma in communications or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience utilizing various mediums of communication including social media (X, Facebook,  Instagram and others), public facing websites, SharePoint sites, and Microsoft Teams. Experience with Nationbuilder and a working knowledge of basic html are assets.
  • Competency in developing quick and engaging content for social media, including photography, graphics and short videos.
  • Experience working in a member-driven association is an asset. 
  • Competency in developing quick and engaging content for social media, including photography, graphics and short videos.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital and social media. Solid understanding of Copyright and privacy legislation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate to diverse audiences using inclusive language approaches. Ability to communicate both verbally and written in French is considered an asset.
  • Strong organization and project management skills with high quality standards and an attention to detail.
  • The ability to multitask, prioritize work assignments and collaborate effectively.
  • A strong sense of diplomacy, tact and risk management when working with external and internal stakeholders; and
  • Three to five years of experience in communications with at least one year in a social media role, media relations or setting. Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Experience writing for multiple social media platforms.
  • Must be able to drive to events occasionally and work irregular hours during times of emergent communication needs.
