The opportunity

Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Officer works collaboratively within the Government, Communications team to enhance the ATA’s communication approaches and overall engagement with internal and external audiences. Responsibilities and portfolios may shift according to changing operational needs; however, the incumbent is required to research, plan, develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies and audience outreach success when shaping and delivering key messages that promote ATA initiatives, programs, services and events. Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Respond to all media inquiries and coordinate interviews
  • Develop or assist in the development of media releases, key messages, talking points and media-related presentations
  • Observe media interviews and provide coaching where necessary
  • Arrange media training sessions as required
  • Coordinate the distribution of media releases, advisories and statements
  • Assist with the organization of in-person, hybrid and livestreamed news conferences
  • Organize the media portion of presidential tours
  • Produce news articles, web and social media content, and collateral for events, programs, services and publications
  • Plan, edit and create engaging content for the ATA’s social media channels
  • Monitor and analyze social media metrics to guide and improve future social media campaigns
  • Create and implement social media strategies and use member engagement, usability and other analytics to measure their effectiveness
  • Develop social media guidelines and strategies for use by ATA staff, leaders and subgroups with direction from the Associate Coordinator, Communications
  • Respond to queries through the ATA’s media channels

Qualifications

  • A diploma in communications or equivalent education and experience
  • Three to five years of experience in communications, with at least one year in a social media role or media relations setting (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Experience writing for multiple social media platforms
  • Experience utilizing various mediums of communication, including social media (X, Facebook, Instagram and others), public facing websites, SharePoint sites and Microsoft Teams 
  • Competency in developing quick and engaging content for social media, including photography, graphics and short videos
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital and social media
  • Solid understanding of copyright and privacy legislation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with diverse audiences using inclusive language approaches
  • Strong organization and project management skills with high quality standards and an attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize work assignments and collaborate effectively
  • Strong sense of diplomacy, tact and risk management when working with external and internal stakeholders
  • Able to drive to events occasionally and work irregular hours during times of emergent communication needs
  • Experience with NationBuilder and a working knowledge of basic HTML are assets
  • Experience working in a member-driven association is an asset
  • Ability to communicate in spoken and written French is an asset
