Overview
Curriculum implementation is a complex task. It requires careful consideration of the diversity of schools and classrooms around the province, and capacity-building across the entire educational system. Other necessary systems involve comprehensive communication strategies, adequate time, teaching and learning resources, professional development and focused inservice activities. All these elements must be available in both rural and urban settings.
This study reflects the ATA’s efforts to gather Alberta teachers’ views on the necessary conditions for implementing the K–4 curriculum and to open up conversations among decision makers to ensure new programs of study are successfully supported and implemented in all schools.
Research method
This study was conducted using three online surveys: two open surveys for all Alberta K–4 teachers, one in English and one in French, and a random stratified sample representing the K–4 teaching population in Alberta.
Qualitative data on the following were collected and analyzed through the surveys:
- The resources and supports that Alberta teachers want to implement the new curriculum
- The aspects of the new curriculum that excite or concern teachers
- Specific questions regarding the proposed full implementation of the curriculum in 2020
