This August, 251 teachers from across Alberta came together for the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s (ATA) Summer Conference, an annual event dedicated to professional development, leadership training and community building for teacher–leaders of the ATA.
Held in Banff, the conference offered a lineup of programs tailored to support and empower teachers in their roles. This year’s offerings included seminars focused on collective bargaining, local political engagement and women in K–12 educational leadership.
The conference featured a keynote presentation from David Edwards, general secretary of Education International. Edwards spoke on the experiences of teachers around the world and the challenges that public education continues to face, from inequity to inaccessibility. He shared with delegates the role that Education International has played in bringing teachers together to help solve these challenging issues.
The conference served as a reminder of the value of working collaboratively to continue to strengthen public education and the teaching profession, both within and beyond provincial borders.
