Statement on injunction application hearing

Media statement

Alberta Teachers’ Association President Jason Schilling has issued the following statement after the Association’s injunction application hearing.

“As strong and free Albertans, teachers could not sit idly after their rights were stripped away by the Government of Alberta’s Back to School Act. It demanded an immediate response.

Our injunction application has now been heard, and it is in the hands of the court to determine whether or not Bill 2 will be suspended. Justice Mah indicated that the ruling would be made next Friday.

Should the Association receive a favourable ruling, teachers will be back in a legal strike position. However, we have promised the court that, in such a scenario, teachers will not resume labour action for three weeks. Instead, in the interim, we will work to achieve a fair negotiated settlement for teachers, their students and all Albertans.

In the event that the court determines that the Association has not met the very high bar set to grant our injunction application, our case will still move forward to a full hearing on its merits, tentatively set for the week of September 21st.”
