Referendum Results
The Alberta Teachers’ Association has issued the following statement regarding the preliminary referendum results for Questions 2 and 4:
“The Alberta Teachers’ Association believes that funding for public education should be distributed in a way that ensures equitable access to educational opportunities for all students. The referendum results leave important questions unanswered for students, families, and schools. Albertans deserve clarity about what the proposed changes will mean in practice and when these changes will take effect. The government’s lack of clarity has left affected families uncertain about whether they will be required to pay for their children’s education and, if so, whether they can afford those costs. Some students are also left wondering whether they will continue to be welcomed in their classrooms alongside their friends.
We therefore ask the government for clarity regarding these matters:
- Families: Who will be affected, what costs might they incur and what happens if they cannot afford them?
- Students: Will currently enrolled students continue to remain in their schools and receive the necessary supports?
- Schools: When will changes take effect, and how will school boards be able to support students during this transition?
Any changes must be implemented in ways that protect families’ trust in their schools. No family should be left feeling uncertain about their child’s ability to continue learning alongside their classmates.
The challenges facing Alberta’s public schools remain and immigrant students are not the problem. Now is the time for the provincial government to focus on making a meaningful difference for students by ensuring manageable class sizes, timely access to specialized supports, and a stable, evidence-based curriculum that prepares them for the future.
Alberta families want schools where every student can learn and thrive. We encourage Albertans to add their voices to the call for stronger public education at albertastomorrow.ca.”
