On Friday, December 19, the Labour Relations Board (LRB) sent a letter to the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) confirming that they have received our bad faith bargaining and unfair labour practice complaints.
The complaints stem from a perceived misrepresentation between the two bargaining parties about what “net new teachers” meant and the subsequent public statements made by the Alberta government on the ATA’s ability to represent its members.
Given the complexity and intersectionality of the complaints, the LRB and the 61 grievances, and the constitutional challenge of Bill 2, the ATA must carefully manage the progress of each file to ensure the success of the overall goal of overturning the Back to School Act (2025).
Additional grievances filed
The ATA has also filed three additional grievances, with more possible, pending investigation. These new grievances have been filed on behalf of the Calgary Public, Calgary Catholic and St Paul locals to deal with earned teacher retro pay being deferred by the school boards until at least January 2026. This action is not only unacceptable but will create an unfair tax situation for members of these locals.
All salary grids and allowances stemming from the legislated contract have been calculated and provided to all school divisions weeks ago. Most school divisions have provided their teachers with the retro pay for 2024/25, which will be applied to this current (2025) taxation year; however, teachers should contact the ATA if they have not received their retro pay in the December 2025 pay run.
ATA trustee meeting notice
A virtual school trustee information meeting is being planned for the evening of January 14, 2026. This session will provide trustees with information on what services the ATA provides and how the work of the ATA supports public schools. The meeting will be conducted via Zoom. Visit the event page for the meeting link.
