Condemning the repeated use of the notwithstanding clause

News release and News Conference graphic

The introduction of Bill 9, the Protecting Alberta’s Children Statutes Amendment Act, and its repeated use of the notwithstanding clause is a dangerous escalation by the government. It should be recognized as what it is: the use of a political weapon.

“When a government uses the notwithstanding clause to avoid accountability rather than to address an emergency, it undermines the balance of power that is meant to protect every one of us.”

ATA President Jason Schilling

The partnership between teachers and parents remains an essential part of education. We believe parents play a vital role in their children’s lives. Our concern is a law that prevents teachers and families from working together in a way that supports safety, trust and student well-being.

“All of us—parents, teachers, students and communities—want the same thing: safe schools, supported children and decisions that put young people first.”

ATA President Jason Schilling

This proposed legislation is once again an extraordinary overreach of power, now targeting vulnerable students. Albertans’ rights must be protected, not circumvented. That is why Alberta’s teachers will stand with parents, students and all Albertans in defending the principles that keep our democracy strong.
