Changes coming to curriculum development

Members' Update

The ATA Curriculum Committee is pleased to share that Alberta Education and Childcare is slowing the pace of curriculum development and implementation. Advocacy work by the ATA, based on feedback heard from teachers, contributed to the ministry removing four subjects that were previously targeted for curriculum development in the 2025/26 school year, leaving three subjects on the development schedule:

  1. 7-9 science
  2. Grade 10 physical education and wellness
  3. Grade 10 career education and financial literacy.

The ministry has also announced that engagements are targeted to begin on high school curriculum renewal, including on an approach to curriculum development and course structures. Teachers who are interested in becoming involved in curriculum development engagements are encouraged to stay tuned for future ministry announcements.

  • Alberta Education and Childcare released an updated Curriculum Implementation and Supports Timeline on Nov. 25, 2025. The updated timeline document can be found here, as well as on curriculum.learnalberta.ca under the Curriculum Implementation Information Hub.
  • This updated timeline notes a slower pace of curriculum development and implementation:
    • Engagements on curriculum development targeted for the 2025/26 school year include:
      • 7-9 science
      • Grade 10 physical education and wellness
      • Grade 10 career education and financial literacy
    • The ministry has removed four subjects that were previously targeted for curriculum development in the 2025/26 school year:
      • 7-9 English language arts and literature
      • 7-9 French first language and literature
      • 7-9 French immersion language arts and literature
      • Grade 10 social studies
    • The implementation schedule continues to include the field testing phase for subjects under development (thus, implementation will continue to be a three-year process of field testing, piloting, and full implementation).
  • This timeline also notes that engagements are targeted to begin on high school curriculum renewal, including on an approach to development and course structures.
