The Alberta Teachers’ Association president Jason Schilling has issued the following statement with regard to the announcement of education funding in Budget 2026.

“The government’s historic $10.8 billion investment in education recognizes the urgency of the crisis teachers have been describing for years. Teachers, students, parents and communities demanded better for public education. This funding is proof that their advocacy was successful.

As the premier and education minister acknowledged, this is only the beginning of the work that needs to be done. A top priority must be expanding complexity teams to all schools, including junior and senior high schools, and ensuring that the 1,600 new teachers are deployed in ways that meaningfully address large class sizes. Promising to uphold Alberta as a world-class leader in education means that the government must deliver the necessary resources, and more.

We will hold the government to account. Our students’ futures depend on the continued and consistent financial support of this government.”

Jason Schilling will be available for additional comments at the Alberta Legislature on Thursday, February 26, following the release of Budget 2026. More information will be provided on Tuesday, March 3, once we’re able to take a closer look at what this means for Alberta’s public education system.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, supports teachers’ professional practice and serves as the advocate for its 51,000 members.
