ATA Responds to New School Flag Regulations

Media statement

Alberta Teachers’ Association President Jason Schilling has issued the following statement in response to the provincial government’s new regulations governing the display of flags in schools:

“The government has created an elaborate set of rules to restrict which flags can be displayed in schools, instead of focusing on the challenges students and teachers face every day. What problem is the government trying to solve here? Albertans aren’t asking for more rules about flags. They’re asking for smaller classes and better supports for students.

These regulations risk creating unnecessary administrative work for already overburdened teachers and school leaders and don’t improve learning conditions for students. At a time when schools are struggling to meet increasingly complex student needs, adding another layer of bureaucracy is the last thing they need.

The regulations also raise serious questions about reconciliation. Schools can display sports team flags all year, but there are restrictions on displaying the flags of First Nations and Métis communities. Alberta’s schools stand on Treaty Lands and Traditional Territories, and Indigenous students, families and communities deserve recognition and respect every day of the year, not just on designated occasions.

Teachers believe that every child deserves to feel welcome, respected and valued in their school community. The flags displayed in our schools can be important symbols of identity and belonging, and government policy should recognize that.”
