ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY

Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Executive Secretary (who serves as the Association’s chief executive officer), the Associate Executive Secretary assists in providing strategic and operational leadership related to the general management of the affairs and programs of the Association. Some of the duties of this position are as follows:

  • Planning and coordinating Association business
  • Overseeing and directing various Association initiatives, events and activities
  • Examining trends
  • Attending and participating in Provincial Executive Council, Table Officers and other committee meetings as assigned and being responsible for Association representation
  • Having general responsibility for matters related to the status of the teaching profession, political and legislative affairs, public relations and internal and external governance
  • Having general responsibility for policy and bylaw development and implementation
  • Acting as Coordinator, Operations, and overseeing and facilitating the work of Teacher Qualifications Service, Central Records/Archives and Building Services
  • Acting on behalf of management in negotiations procedures with professional and support staff

Qualifications

Key requirements

  • Extensive senior leadership experience in public education, a professional association or a comparably complex member-based organization
  • Commitment to prioritizing and advancing the broader strategic and operational goals of the Association in an evolving political, economic and governance environment
  • Strong capabilities in leadership and change management, with a commitment to equity, inclusion and respect for the diversity of the teaching profession
  • Demonstrated success in developing and sustaining collaborative partnerships, including productive relationships with government, education partners and key stakeholders
  • Awareness of where to find and apply legislation, policy and the Education Act

In addition, the following are required:

  • Must qualify for an Alberta teaching certificate and have a minimum of five years of successful teaching and/or management experience in public education
  • Proven commitment to public education
  • Ability to undertake travel and evening/weekend work
  • Experience in school leadership is considered an asset

A demonstrated commitment to the Alberta Teachers’ Association (or another Canadian teachers’ organization) will be considered an asset, as will the ability to work in the French language. The Association is committed to reconciliation, and a candidate’s knowledge and experience of related issues and/or membership in an Indigenous community is considered an asset.

What This Position Offers

The successful candidate will be employed under a personal services contract, which includes an attractive compensation and benefits package. The initial location will be in Edmonton, but future assignments may be at any current or future Association office. Duties will commence on November 1, 2026, or on a mutually agreeable date.
